African American Communities

Savannah has a culturally rich and diverse heritage including traditionally African American Communities.  Some of these communities originally housed free-blacks (emancipated slaves).  After the Civil War, many more communities began to develop as well as churches, shops, schools and other community services.  Each community would develop around bonds of friendship and kinship.  Some communities came about as a result of industries in Savannah.  The list below is just a sampling of different African American Communities in the Savannah Area.
