Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery gains its name from the failed plantation of John Mullryne and his son-in-law Josiah Tattnall.  In 1846, Commodore Josiah Tattnall III sold the plantation to Peter Wiltberger.  Wiltberger designated seventy acres of the plantation as a public cemetery.
Over time the cemetery changed its borders and encompassed acreage for a Jewish section named Evergreen.  In 1907, the city of Savannah purchased Evergreen and it was incorporated into Bonaventure which is maintained by the Savannah Department of Cemeteries.  (Courtesy of the Historical Society Guide)
This photograph shows the veterans' section of Bonaventure Cemetery.  The headstones are the same as those issued for veterans buried in National Cemeteries around the United States.
