Calhoun Square
at Abercorn and Wayne Streets
Named for South Carolinian John C. Calhoun, who accompanied President Monroe to Savannah in 1819 to witness the launching of the SS Savannah, this square has been used as a playground by generations of Savannah school children who attended Massie School, located on the southeast corner of the square. At present, Massie school serves the Savannah/Chatham Board of Education as a museum, and once a year hosts a Mayday dance around a Maypole for elementary school children.
