Catholic Cemetery

The Catholic Cemetery was opened in August 1853.
During the Yellow Fever epidemic in 1854, two clergy members fell victim to the virus.  Right Reverend F. X. Gartland became the first Bishop to be buried in the cemetery.

During the Civil War, parts of the Catholic cemetery were damaged by Union troops.  The Union later apologized for the damage and said it was a necessary evil.
