Johnson Square

at Bull and West St. Julian Streets

The first square to be laid out by Oglethorpe, Johnson Square has always been considered the business center of Savannah.  On  the lots surrounding the square sit Christ Church, banking institutions, restaurants, and a hotel.  The square itself houses the monument honoring Nathaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War hero often referred to as the "savior of the South."  This fifty-foot tall obelisk, designed by the Greene & Pulaski Monument subcommittee, is a monument to his memory and a marker for his gravesite. For several years this was the site of Night in Old Savannah, run by the Girls Scouts.  Night in Old Savannah reflected the international business community offering cuisine from many different countries, music and games for children.
