Lafayette Square

at Abercorn and East Macon Streets

The most imposing structure on Lafayette Square is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, dear to the hearts of Savannah's large and distinguished Irish-American population.  For this reason, every March 17th, the water in the fountain is dyed green, an indication of how important St. Patricks' Day is to the city.  On the west side of the square is _________________, part of St. John's parochial school system, which extends to Liberty Street on the north. Also on the west side of the square is the Hamilton-Turner house, and on Charlton Street, in allignment with the western edge of the square is the childhood home of one of Georgia's most famous writers, Mary Flannery O'Connor.  Across from the Hamilton Turner house is the imposing Georgian home built for English merchant Andrew Low, into which Juliette Gordon moved as the new bride of Low's son William.  Directly behind the Low house is it's carriage house, which became the first headquarters of the Girl Scouts of America.
