Madison Square

at Bull and East Macon Streets

The buildings surrounding Madison Square capture the true essence of Savannah.  The Green-Meldrim house, belonging to St. John's Episcopal Church and a significant feature of the square, served as headquarters for  General William T. Sherman upon his arrival to Savannah during the Civil War.  Also alongside the square is the Desoto Hilton Hotel, which replaced the Desoto Hotel. The square is also flanked by the Sorrel-Weed House, E. Shaver Bookstore, and the Scottish Rite Temple.  Centered in the square sits the monument of Sergeant William Jasper who was killed at the Siege of Savannah, 9 October 1779.
