This canal was built in the early decades of the nineteenth century. It connected the Savannah and the Ogechee Rivers. The original plan was to extend it south to the Altamaha River, but the local sandy soil made both digging and maintenance difficult. Nevertheless, the canal became an important site of access to the Savannah River, and most of the nineteenth century industrial sites were located near the canal.
