TYBEE ISLAND

Tybee Beach also known as Savannah Beach was developed as a family orientated resort in the late nineteenth century.  At that time, Savannahians reached the beach via the Tybee and Brinson Railroad.  The railroad has been adapted by Rails to Trails into a picturesque path over the marshes from Bull River to Fort Pulaski.  The families who came to Tybee over a century ago constructed temporary shelters on the beach out of palmetto fronds.
