CAMP 460

FORT PULASKI

On May 10, 1934, Company 460, relocated from Cornelia, Georgia to Cockspur Island, 18 miles east of Savannah, Georgia.   While stationed at Fort Pulaski, the enrollees were commissioned to work on the restoration of the Fort, a project that had begun under the Department of the Interior.   The CCC men made considerable improvements  to the Fort, including the construction of a bridge to the mainland, and the addition of several recreational areas.   An educational program was an integral part of camp life and the men were encouraged to study history and psychology.  Many received their first opportunity to learn to read.  During their free time, enrollees enjoye the Savannah area, as well as the beach at  Tybee Island

In April 1937, a side camp was established at Bacon Park in Savannah.  The purpose of the side camp was to build the Robert Frechner Recrational Area, named after the national director of the CCC.  The men at Camp 460 were fortunate to have had many visits from Mr. Fechner, who lived near Savannah.
