THE LECONTE'S AT WOODMANSTON

These silhouettes (circa 181201825) are the only known images of Louis and Ann LeConte.  The originals were among the few personal items of the LeConte family to survive the Civil War.

Louis LeConte (1782-1838) was a man of many talents and varied interests.  he is most noted for the botanical garden he developed at Woodmanston.  In his leisure time, Louis developed his skills as an amateur scientist.  Knowledgeable in Latin, mathematics, zoology, and chemistry.  Louis was also regarded by his contemporaries as an expert on the natural history of the southeastern United States.

In 1812, Louis married Ann Quarterman of Liberty County.  They lived at Woodmanston and raised six children there.  Ann died of pneumonia in 1826, and Louis died in 1838 after a short illness.  They are buried at Midway Church Cemetery on U.S. Highway 17 in Midway, Georgia.
